Everything she learned she probably taught herself. She most likely had a little education when she was young (reading and writing) either before her mom died or before her dad got tired of her stutter. At which point she was abused and not raised anymore. Currency probably was not in any of the books at either library. She isn’t stupid because she picked up rather quickly from Ruth. She just wasn’t educated and they use more than one currency. Imagine trying to figure out all the coins from 2 different countries that you’ve never seen before with no instructions and no internet.

Just because someone does not like the character or her representation does not automatically mean: 1) it is discrimination against her stutter or disabilities in general, 2) anyone expected a flawless character (flaws are very much a part of what can make characters interesting), and/or 3) thinks lifelong abuse can be overcome in [insert timeframe here].
I didn’t mind her concept of her character, actually thought it was a decent taken on the abused protagonist trope, but it would seem that every time she did something that endeared her to me it would be right before doing something to destroy my newfound affection. So I have been skipping chapters to see if it ends up worth my time. I heard the novel was good.

i think the protag is pretty relatable, as someone who struggles with anxiety + a speech impediment (and actually suffered from bullying at school and at home). it’s difficult to overcome these things and even in adulthood i find myself struggling with them.
dgmw it’s definitely ANNOYING but that’s just how it is. it’d be kind of boring and unrealistic to me if she got over a lifetime’s worth of abuse after being sexed up a few times. that isn’t how things work.

In this historical period, ALL WOMEN were basically “useless” (physically).
Our main character here grew up in a terrible household, trauma doesn’t disappear easily, but in these chapters, we can see that she IS improving. (Slowly, but surely).

I admit that the mc is clumsy so they aren’t a marry sue trope is annoying, but it definitely makes sense for Maxi’s character. The way she was abused growing up, it really isn’t a surprise that she would have issues with how she presents herself. Don’t ignore the progress she made because she tripped, because from what we have seen so far, this is a step in the right direction.

Why be biased towards the FL? She isn’t useless or annoying, she’s improving herself at her pace. You can’t expect her to go from a traumatized person all her life to a happy go lucky strong woman just like that. When you break your bones, does it heal in less than a week? No, it takes weeks to months to heal. Well, that’s how the FL is, she’s broken from all the abuse she suffered so it’s going to take much longer for her to overcome her trauma and heal from it. She may be stuttering now because Riften wasn’t in Anatol when the what-chu-ma-call-it guy came from Liberon and started attacking. And as the wife of a lord or a knight that rules Anatol, she has a responsibility to protect and serve in the name of Anatol. But how can she do that when she is scared. But I think it was amazing how she screamed at the guy, that she has the courage and bravery. Yes, she may stutter now, but who knows what will happen in the future. I hope this message has gave you all a note about a little courage and bravery, and even though you have a fear of something, you shouldn’t give up.

Not to dig on anyone but in medieval times, the bardic tradition was very strong. Telling gross exaggerations of the truth was de rigueur.. Tales would go ever more heroic with each retelling; This would help cement a hero’s reputation as a larger than life figure and inspire/entertain the common folk, most of whom had grueling lives without much to break up their labors. It also worked as a warning to those who might raid, etc. that attacking these lands will face harsh justice from the hero/ruler (being smote by someone used to smiting dragons would be too much smiting for most villains). It was medieval public relations. So this would’ve been the storytelling model with which Maxi would’ve been familiar, so she’s predisposed to telling stories that way. This would be part of the reason Ruth actually contributed as such. The oral tradition was a huge part of the culture, so intimating that it was lies simply for aggrandizement or because of a character flaw seems unduly harsh. Why you gotta smite the storytellers?

Please don’t hate the female leads character, as a person who suffered abuse mentally and physically she need constant reassurance she’s been made to think she is useless so much that any kind of shouting or change of mood makes her think she’s done something wrong, it’s also hard since the male has different way of showing affection and everytime he keeps comparing it to her household not knowing she never got any of those, he really shouldn’t remind her of her place of trauma as it makes her harder to open up, as she thinks that if she’s different from his expectations he will distance himself, she just wants love and reassurance to heal and the worse the trauma is the harder it is take a step forward, the male should not just use physical affection but constant reassurance without showing a attitude that makes her think otherwise

If you grow up in that environment from the start, the likelihood of you being tamed like this is very high, it’s normal for her to not get over with those insecurities and fears without any major influences. I’ve read the novel before, the ML’s character setting is a hot-tempered, sharp-mouthed but tofu-hearted (only soft to Max) knight who was rough and straightforward like any other soldier, because he was initially just a poor peasant (i think? with rather poor upbringing and low origin) who rose up in the ranks with his battle abilities. He knew that the nobles look down on him, especially the family where Max came from who were staunch aristocrats, and that no reputable ladies wanted to marry him. Because Max’s dad didn’t want to face the dragon, he forced ML to marry Max and shoulder the task, and when ML saw Max’s reactions, he thought she disliked him like every noble did and only agreed because the mission is an impossible task w/100% expected death. Then he came back alive and saw Max’s ‘unwilling & fearful’ appearance, so he was upset that she wished he was dead, or so he thought, thus his hot-tempered nature kept flaring up. Don’t worry, if this follows thw novel, his tsundere appearance will soon turn to absolute pampering, but he is still definitely a rough straight A guy.

it’s surprising to me how some readers on here don’t understand that being raised like her – physically, mentally, and emotionally abused will be traumatizing. and trauma is not something one can overcome in a matter of environmental change, especially in a short amount of time. many people barely overcome it. when a child is fed constantly with the idea that they’re useless, incompetent, and unlovable, it will grow and stick in their psyche – it’s significantly grave and these days would actually require treatment. to add up, she was also physically abused and basically reminded to just die already. I’ve been seeing comments of how she seems “pathetic” or “infuriatingly weak” but those words only show the ignorance of some readers.

I think a lot of people are excusing Maxi’s appeal by talking about her traumatic past. The issue here isn’t Maxi’s trauma or personality. Her personality can be appealing, or at least not annoying, if written better. The story continually revisits the same traumatic episodes every few chapters. The repetition of seeing such scenes can become really boring after a while. You can allude to them without showing them all over again, since the audience is aware that it already happened. Aside from that, Maxi isn’t really accomplishing anything of too significant value? She doesn’t have a real chance to shine by accomplishing anything meaningful. She is redecorating a castle. Like, that’s fine and dandy but its not that great. Why not help rebuild the nearby city in the territory? Do something that has a bit more impact that just the aesthetics of her husband’s castle. Maybe they are in charge of helping keeping the nearby city safe, so Maxi is charged of increasing quality of life there. She could take ideas from her own home town and apply it there. She can still struggle with all of her issues, but it actually seems like she’s doing something. I don’t mind her too much at this point, but I am hoping to get some more actual story action coming soon.

people keep commenting “oh she should get a grip” or “she’s so useless” but fail to realize that the whole point of the last few chapters was her forcing herself to be “useful” by being a good lady. she managed the castle household, oversaw construction, and studied finance and mathematics. she could’ve moped around and cried over her abusive past but she’s finding the strength to push forward. i’m guessing people want her to be the stereotypical badass, sarcastic, and witty “strong” female archetype. and yes, while maxi is feeble and small i think she has the potential to be very VERY strong, and she doesn’t have to fight monsters to prove it.
i’ll try to list all the abuse maxi has gone through her life
-no motherly presence in her life (supposedly died)
-verbally and physically abused by father
-constantly belittled and compared to her sister
-did not receive the proper care any noble lady should have (i.e get formal dresses, a proper noble betrothal)
-was not taken seriously by her staff (she keeps reiterating that weak masters gets manipulated by their servants)
-was not allowed proper social interaction (she wasn’t let outside for 3 years, which doesn’t say much about the years before that)
-received barely any formal education (poor woman barely knows maths and currency)
-no words needed for the lack of love and affection she has received. which is saying something since a bad childhood can produce murderers and psychopaths
you guys have NO IDEA how difficult it is ot adjust to a whole new environment, especially with someone as sheltered as maxi, but what matters is she IS TRYING. not to mention, she keeps saying that “she wasn’t raised or seen as a proper lady” so it could be assumed that she was never taught these things back home and thus had to learn from scratch. she’s working through her trauma even without properly telling someone about the abuse she went through. the moment where she yelled at the intruders really made me proud since ruth wasn’t forcing her into standing her ground, it was her own strength that helped her to prove herself. my point is, people only seek strength found in people like riftan. women in media need to be aggressive and loud and relatively “manly” like in order to be seen as strong, but we fail to see the inner strength it takes to deal with unresolved trauma and disabilities. ESPECIALLY on your own.
all in all, it’s only been 30 chapters guys. we’ve barely scratched the surface of maxi’s character growth, and y’all are already demanding that she go down there and fucking punch the intruders in the jaw. just relax.

I like the under the oak tree in Riftans POV, there’s a novel that explains everything why riftan choose to stay with maxi and why riftan ask if maxi if real.. in the story were Riftans POV starts when hes still 8 years old, he already has his eyes and mind and heart to Maxi. He was just a lowley kid that time who collect woods and make charcoal at croix palace.. its so unfortunate yet still theres always a rainbow after the storm, then it also nightlight there the fist day when Ruth and Riftan meet and the 1st sword competition he join and became the champion, it is all because of maxi that keeps him going .
