-they break up in chapter 43 of the novel
-her biological half brother is a jerk who had a sexual interest in her
-countess thebesa is much crueler in the novel, in the original she directly told her that she will not be welcomed back home if she breaks up with her fiancee
-there is a high possibility that the pregnancy is fake. apparently her bump size is described very inconsistently in the novel
-layla becomes a baron later on
-phil is not actually downplaying his interest in sisley, the child is truly the only thing he wants from her and he turned his back to her when she miscarried. layla is accused of causing the miscarriage, phil goes directly to her house and tries to force her to carry his child. apparently his goal from the beginning was to raise a child with layla, which would have been sweet if he wasn’t such a piece of shit
-there are a bunch of rumors about the emperor and layla having an affair
-the woman the ml dances with is his relative (a half sister I think) so she is not a danger to the main couple
oh yeah, and btw. Reasons layla can’t leave: doesn’t have money, doesn’t have any kind of support, doesn’t have any skills she can use in a job (sewing, cooking etc), governesses need to be married and their income is not stable, all the jobs she could take have minimal wages or less, because her marriage was delayed for so long she is considered too old to be an acceptable marriage match for most nobles and the only ones who would take her would be bottom of the barrel. there is also the duke’s employees and citizens, she worked tirelessly for them for a decade at this point, she loved them and they love her (she actually keeps in contact with them even after she leaves). Not only that, she feels a great sense of responsability for them because she saw the late duke and duchess as parents. Phileo is incompetent and she knows it, is she leaves he would have to take back his responsibilities and that would hurt a lot of people
So the answer to “why she doesn’t leave?” is: the circumstances are not right. if she leaves now she will end up on the streets with no money. after she becomes a royal official tho… that’s another set of circumstances entirely
I know she literally has no choice but to stay with him but could she stop doing everything for him because she only tried that once for a second let him realize just how useless he is. He’s going to be done for the minute she leaves him.
