Ugh. It’s hard to like (though easy to empathize with) a woman who lacks the basic decency to tell her then husband that she’s pregnant with their child and then runs away like a criminal. In the real world, that would be considered very bad decision making. No matter the circumstances (barring severe abuse) should one spouse decide on their own about divorce and pregnancy without talking to their spouse about the issues like an adult. It’s self-centered to make all the decisions in the marriage without having a thoughtful discussion with your spouse. Seriously, her behavior is not unlike Sovieshu (emperor in Remarried Empress) mixed with a dose of martyr complex, which is fairly common in this genre.
I like this story but if someone behaved like Ellie in the real world, they’d be considered a selfish asshole. Not that this extinguishes my desire to read the story. I don’t have a burning need to like a character to find them interesting. Honestly, a flawed character is far more compelling than a perfect one.
