The motivation of the emperor makes no sense. Even before the princess was born he made no sense, so it can’t even be excused as brainwashing. The emperor refused to marry or sire an heir, meaning the imperial line was meant to die with him. And yet he allowed Duke Calabria to marry with La Floyd, in order to create a single heir to inherit both the empire and the two duchies. But what point would it serve to do that? By the time that plan started working, he’d be an old man. Rian wouldn’t inherit either duchy until his parents died, by which point the emperor would also have one foot in the grave. He’s just screwing up the empire for future generations to deal with it. And now he’s shocked that the dukes don’t like his hamfisted attempts to control them.
