to the people that don’t understand why the count thinks he did smth by revealing that vincent is the son of a prostitute from the gutter. basically the people born in the gutter are considered lower than humans, they have a hierarchy and exploitation goes high there( it has been a while since I read the novel so be patient with me here) and I think that the lowest in the food chain have their tongues cut. the duke DESPISES the gutter and it is widely considered that all people born there are spies. vincent came to the duchy on his own and although it was obvious that he grew up really poor there was no reason to believe that he was from the gutter. by revealing this the count accuses him of espionage and without mc his plan would have worked. now, why would the info about his mom being a prostitute be more important than literal eye witnesses saying that they saw him in the gutter? because just being there for whatever reason and actually being born there are two completely different matters.
tl;dr the people from the gutter are seen as lower than human, the count hopes that revealing that vincent was born to someone from the gutter would make the duke give up on him and so maybe save his own skin by letting the duke know what kind of “lowly” child he adopted
