finally it’s coming to light. khalid gets a ton of hate (some of it warranted) but it’s insane that people can still hate him so strongly despite what’s been spoiled. this chapter confirms it.
Ersha, where Estelle and Khalid used to be from and where the story is right now, used to be ruled by Fabianus, an honestly horrible king that abused his daughter (the princess with bruises) and brainwashed his knights. that includes Estelle.
because she was a commoner, because the war was beginning to end in Jansgar’s favor, the king of Ersha would likely torture and kill and ruin Estelle’s reputation OR turn her into an awful mad dog obedient to the crown.
Khalid killing her on the field was mercy. he let her die with the honor of a knight, then surrendered, which effectively ended the war in Jansgar’s favor and prevented King Fabianus from expanding his cruel rule. it came at the price of FL’s head, but it was something that had to be done.
the Knights that followed her would obviously not know of Khalid’s goal, but much of the nobility would understand this. it’s cruel but it’s war – if the death of one meant stopping the death of thousands more, many would take it. this is also why Zed is seen as a hero even to Ersha, why Estelle can’t fathom that he could be loved by the enemy, and what Dame Rise is talking about.
I would think Khalid’s obsessive nature stems from a trauma born from having to choose between saving a nation/stopping a war and making himself look like a traitorous fool to the uninformed, or saving a woman he might’ve loved, cherished, who took care of him for years. his obsessive is from having to murder her.
we wanna believe that a loved one would choose you against the world, but if it meant mercy and peace, then things change.
I like Lucy. I like Zed and I also really like Khalid. I don’t necessarily think he should be endgame but he deserves to be understood properly and to be given credit for saving her from a life of brainwashed control or torture and ignorance

Khalid becomes more and more hateworthy with every revelation the author brings. It makes no sense to make him a love interest.

^ Yeah I like the open minded but the only problem is why he had to chop her head off and offer it to the enemy
