I’m pretty sure it’s for the sake of the story and keeping us guessing but, it really seems like he doesn’t know he’s the fake here. Possibly the Demon stone given a vessel or soemthing like that. Not sure. Damn good story though. Not revealing true inner thoughts.
There is also the possibility that he doesn’t know he’s fake, even though he took out the jeweled eyes. So the second one is more unlikely.
