I’ve only just realised this, but is this loosely based on the real-life War of the Roses (a war between York & Lancaster for the crown of England). That would make Dietrich part of Lancaster/the red roses, and Hermann would be York/the white roses.
Especially since when the war was fought, the red roses won, and then the king took Elizabeth York (a white rose) as his wife.
