From what I understand, she wanted to leave with her lover. But she became pregnant of her third child, making her unable to travel for her health. Her lover must have left alone and now she is stuck in this house, just because of a child.
@BBs2 true. At this point we can count 2 children that we know for sure are the cardinal’s: Ari and Arabella, one that we know for sure is not his: Ippolito, and then there is Isabella. My guess is that Isabella is also not the cardinal’s, and I think that for the next reasons:
1. Like Ippolito, Isabella had her mother’s favour
2. If Lucrecia couldn’t run away because she got pregnant with the cardinal’s child then the one she hated should be Isabella, her 2nd, not Arabella, her 3rd, so Isabella is also her lover’s
3. The cardinal’s children both have names that start with A, while Ippolito and Isabella’s start with I, weaker reasoning, yes, but I think the author might have done this on purpose

^ most likely because she could’ve already been publicly with the cardinal, therefore abortion would be out of the picture (considered sacrilegious). it could’ve 1) prevented her from traveling 2) made her lover disappointed or tired of waiting and maybe even heartbroken to hear, so he left without her, and 3) sealed her to the cardinals side. so in her eyes, ippolito and isabella were products of love and arabella prevented her from chasing happiness
