I think it’s complicated. the side story tells of gold (the woman) and ranon (the emperor) who are the same as the woman who possess rozentine in our current timeline and the ghost who helps rozentine. ranon may or may not truly love her nor their children but her children are gifted with her abilities, and between them there’s a hatred (partially sown by their father, partially sown by their powers and succession). the third prince is the one she left to the river, who will survive because she blessed the cloth he’s swaddled in.
gold’s rage will follow the current plot and she uses Rozentine’s body (and we’re uncertain if she was chosen because of her past life’s ability to see ghosts or if she’s always been the chosen one) and she will force Rozentine to carry out her will and possibly kill one of Ranon’s bloodline (ml, Prince Chartreuse). but Rozentine’s will and love is stronger and overcomes this curse, which Gold willingly tries to break/let go of (as we see prior to Rozentine getting shot with the arrow). Ranon is also the ghost that helps Rozentine in much of the plot so we also don’t know what exactly his motive is/why he’s helping and if he knows about Gold’s influence on Roze. Gold’s rage also manifests as the curse on siblings where if there are 2, one will be cursed to die.
nonetheless, it seems to me (just by personality alone), Ranon’s mannerisms are directly manifesting in the Crown Prince (Chartreuse’s brother, who Roze saves) so I wonder what’s going on there.
I think Ranon does love Gold and maybe the reason why he helps Rozentine is because he sees Gold in her or senses her influence. But I think in the side story’s timeline, his selfishness and fulfillment of duty is what makes him a dick
Ranons wish is that the empire would prosper and there wont be any fights rebellions some such. And for this wish to be true the emperor must have power akin to some God. But this come at a price. The future emperor’s siblings die and the ones closes to him all die basically. Thats the price. Ranon had Gold full fill this wish of his. And now Gold has no choice but to do it. But it will take her son’s life.
