The witch is still alive and the first emperor probably bound her into service and screwed her over by taking her heart which is probably the same one that granted FL’s wish in the beginning. I think FL committed suicide and used the heart so in turn rewound time but the only one with that knowledge is FL and not the witch herself even if her heart had granted the wish. (Just guessing.)

I also feel bad for him but I think he got his consciousness back, like a few chapter before we see the witch recasting the spell on him, then at the last few panel we saw the light dots (highlights) in his eyes again. I wonder what he is planning

i have a theory that he’s semi under control and he came to actually love the villainess and is not tryna break the control. Cause if you see that banquet scene again his eyes kinda come back for a bit.
So the painting before was of the 1st emperor what that occultist hate either he betrayed her or her family or she just a jelous woman feelings passed down to generation or shes kind of an immortal? She should tell all their dtaff never to give their full name or let her touch them
