I think the mother lost sight of the forest for the trees. She suffered because she was alone, so she focused her efforts on finding good husbands for her daughters. But she forgets that position, wealth, and power is pointless if your husband has no respect for you and you are miserable. The husbands of all of Tatiana’s sisters may not be as “good” as the duke on paper, but they’re clearly happy with their positions.
She has tied up her own life goals with Tatiana, thinking if she can make the perfect match for her she will “win at life” and be vindicated for all her suffering.
She’s basically selling her children for money, power, and position. Nothing can account for what she’s doing no matter how hard of a time she had. Imagine forcing marriage upon your daughter because the family has a high status and great wealth. She doesn’t care about her children and only really views them as her assets and valuable items, I cannot sympathize with her toxic abusive behavior one bit and I don’t think I really ever will. If she ends up being abandoned by her children in the wealth and status she has now… it will all be her fault.
