I think that rather than love, he is looking for salvation. From the beginning, he didn’t hated Haewon he was just indifferent to her. But when Haewon was fighting this person (I forgot the chapter) she was like “don’t mess up with my people” and that’s when he wonder that perhaps, if he became one of her people, perhaps she would protect him as well
