You know I don’t really feel too sympathetic for the MC. It’s not like the emperor being cruel was a secret she only found out about after sleeping with him. She was one of the imperial knights, a highly motivated one at that. She never cared about how cruel the emperor was, until she thought that cruelty might be aimed at her. And then she raised both their children to believe that the emperor was evil, hiding the identity of the father. She’s extremely selfish. She had no real reason to believe the emperor would harm the children.
I am confused as to why the emperor claimed to have always known about her condition, when at times he’s shown to not have known. If he knew, then why did he threaten her when she asked what he would do if someone claimed to have their child? The whole game of “pretending not to know she was the woman he spent the night with” was also strange. We don’t really get a close look at his motivations, but it feels like the emperor acts contradictorily simply because the author wanted to set up a certain scene and a consistent characterization would get in the way.

I have a hard time liking any of the characters because of how selfish and idiotic they all are. The MC’s reluctance, the sole source of conflict in the story, is based on an offhand comment by the emperor that has been soundly refuted by now. He clearly wants her alive and unharmed, same as the children. Plus, it’s pretty hypocritical of her to call him evil, when she herself trained from a commoner into a knight and then an imperial guard to enforce the “evil emperor”‘s laws and protect him. So she was going around doing the evil emperor’s bidding energetically enough to be recognized and raised as the youngest imperial guard. She must have had to work extra hard to impress her superiors, considering she is both a commoner and a woman, but she did so for, I assume, a bigger paycheck? Her own safety and stability? And that’s fine, but she can’t then turn around and accuse him of being evil when she was obviously complicit up until she felt herself threatened.
The captain of the guard is also an idiot. First, she has never shown any interest in him and basically rejected him twice already, but he still has an obsession with her. He is also helping the rebels even though they will obviously kill Elan and the children if they get the chance. Rebels don’t generally forgive family members of royalty, and he already almost had all three die because he fed the rebels information about how to ambush the emperor.
And the emperor, for some inconceivable reason, tried to get her to open up by appearing in her dreams, but then when she did try to approach him while awake he answered in ways that led to her being terrified and want to run away. The whole story would have basically been over if he’d simply told her he knew and that she had nothing to fear. After all, she doesn’t actually care that he’s an evil tyrant, she just worries about her own neck (and her children).

I like the captain much more because he was always there trying to help and care for her. I understand why she ran away I would do the same in her case too because the emperor kills so many people, plus he just sat and watched her suffer and meets her in the magical dreams. Plus the palace isn’t safe considering the captain’s sister is a bitch (she must have been the one who pushed our MC down the stairs after being jealous). She could have lost the baby….And all the stress is just unhealthy for a pregnant woman, she was constantly tiptoeing around …running around…and alert about her situation. Yet it was just too stressful, then in that dream, he wants her to be his empress…Yet why can he say it to her face in person? The story is a bit all over the place because there’s a lot of mystery to uncover….I hope the MC will just live happily with her baby.
