I kiiiiind of blame the old emperor now to not teaching his son the freaking importance of the Chade family (i.e. ability to control and ignite magic stones). Like, isn’t it your job to teach WHY things are a certain way? To teach the secrets passed down instead of letting your son be ignorant and build up an unwarranted hatred against the Chade family?
The current emperor is tactless and too stupid, letting his emotions rule rather than using his brain. But yeah I also agree that the old emperor made a big mistake by not educating his heir properly.
