The servants were loyal and caring, and it doesn’t look like there was another woman, so there shouldn’t have been room for the funds to be stolen. Not sure about the disease that killed her, but considering she already had children securing the inheritance, she shouldn’t have been targeted.
Aside from that not making sense, it seems the usual loving husband with an inferiority complex who neglects his wife because he doesn’t think he’s good enough, and spends his time campaigning for money.
