Well it’s a little confusing but to better understand it’s just its power. she can go into her future and her past, so She is old and goes into the past to help them and seeing that he cannot have 2 her in the same time-lapse, her child is going into the future.
this is exactly what happened at the beginning of the story we see when she is a child in the future while there she is older and will talk to the guard about her coming
So basically, Gratia possessed divine power that allows her to time travelling. Since she can’t exist as young-Gratia and adult-Gratia at the same timeline, it means they will have to switch places when the time travel accured. Young-Gratia will be transport into the future (10 years later) while adult-Gratia travel back to the past (10 years earlier). At the beginning of the story, young-Gratia was transported into the future because adult-Gratia went back in time to inform the family of her own return. And now young-Gratia is sent to the future again while the adult-Gratia was in the past (current place) to save the Duchess and the twins. Basically Gratia has the power to switch places with herself in the past, she can manipulate the past to get the future outcome but everyone from the future cannot spoil it to the young-Gratia. See it under adult-Gratia POV instead, it would be easier to understand because the young-Gratia is still very clueless
