I appreciate that the author at least tried to justify her, but it’s not enough. There are things that Lancelot could have done better to avoid the whole issue from the start, like give her enough information to reach out to him if she was ever in need and so on. But there was plenty she could have done to take charge over her life before she was sold off to pay off the monastery’s debts. For example, instead of thinking that she was going to be taken care of by others her whole life, being passed from the monastery to her future hubby, she could have tried to start earning her keep in some manner.
I mean, she promised she would wait, did she not consider that keeping that promise might involve supporting herself at some point, if he was delayed?
And why the massive difference in mourning between the person she grew up with dying, and her husband of one year who didn’t care about her at all? She thought Lancelot died, and didn’t seem to be affected (not that she had any confirmation, because she didn’t look for news of him), but her husband dies and she becomes her brother-in-law’s punching bag and assassin out of guilt?
Also, why didn’t she try to find him during the year that she was married? At that point she had resources, and had not been abused so much. She could at least have tried to find out the identity of her childhood friend, so she could at the very least send flowers to his grave. But no, she didn’t care to find out anything about this person she supposedly cared so much about.
