I believe there was this whole thing where Ash was either dressed as a female or was originally female. I remember someone mentioning in a comment that in this world, you were capable of choosing your chosen gender through something like magic or whatever during a young age. Its implied that the little girl that Chloe knew was likely Ash (Ashley, the blonde girl who gave her a stuffed animal) and that Ashley fell in love with her, became male, and then searched for her, which is how he knew she was at that wife auction. He also seems to have past circumstances with Chloe’s biological parents. Regardless, this may be why the prince seems to have an interest in Ash beyond friendship. This story does an interesting job of having characters love other characters regardless of their genderlr, orientation, or gender identity; its very sweet actually. Theres quite a lot that we still don’t know
^ Ash also likely chose to be male as a personal preference (as in he chose to identify as male as time passed), but also possibly to gain influence by obtaining the Marquis title (in a predominantly patriarchal society, men may have more power/easier time gaining power), for security for himself, but also for Chloe if/when he found her. Then it may also make it easier to marry her
