I think either he really did love her but then smth happened that caused him to change. Like being played by other people. Maybe someone who he became close with convinced him that the MC is bad or smth like that. Or dudes just a real good actor and he never loved MC. But it’s sus how in the previous chapters he was showing some signs of mercy? Idk whats the word??. In chapter one when he looked at her I though hm that’s a sus face. Like guilty? (He better be guilty). Idk if it was just for show or if he really did feel guilty that’s why he ordered the servant to make a grave or smtH in chapter 1 after her execution. Also that lady who was with the emperor in her first life. The one who was smiling is sus too. Like her face says she had it planned or smth. ;-; I wrote so much dang.
